Solution Projects in Tanjung Piai

Solution project 1

Project description

The solution project for the villagers in Kg. Melayu Jalan Benteng in Tanjung Piai aims to benefit the village as a whole by educating all villagers about waste management and conducting clean-ups in the village.

Furthermore, the project has also impacted individuals outside of the village by involving them as volunteers in World Cleanup Day. The project seeks to address waste in the mangroves of rural areas. Waste removal is an issue in these places because the mangroves are not placed under any tax jurisdictions, hence waste is not removed by the local authorities. The project also specifically seeks to develop a sustainable waste management structure for the village by understanding its waste profile, waste flow and waste source.

This project will raise awareness and will give educations to the beneficiaries on sustainable waste management plan.

The project activities are mini cleanup and community engagement, mega cleanup and community engagements, waste audit and profiling study, environmental education video, community interview and input, and site visit with agency and discussion with agency regarding the challenges barrier.

The solution provider of this project is Impaclution. The project duration is one year with an allocation of RM15,000.00. The main SDGs impacted through this solution project is SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG15: Life on Land.

2021 SOLUTION PROJECTS - PHASE 2

SOLUTION PROJECT 1

Project description

The Tanjung Piai State Park (526ha) is the most visited state park in the country and is connected to the Kukup Mangrove Island (647ha) along the coast. The state park has many assets that are site-specific, but these items are normal to the community here. Thus, this project solution aims to showcase these site-specific materials and content like how to whistle like a Mangrove Pitta.

The modules that will be used in this activity include five lessons which are about blue carbon, climate change, migratory birds, endemic species and the coast and our consumption. Methodology, communications development, pilot project and reporting will be included as well in the project duration.

The goal for this project is to increase revenue, mangrove tree planting efforts and bring back the species of wood that is almost extinct; traditionally used to make musical instruments, boat parts and gasing. The phase of the project will also connect to the previous SDG 12 micro supply chain and community mapping activities.

This program once completed will be available to the Tanjung Piai State Park to sell as Educational Tours to both local and International Schools from JB and Singapore which make up the majority of its visitors. The solution provider of this project is Pertubuhan Pemulihan Ekologi dan Kepelbagaian Biologi Malaysia (RESTORE). The project duration is four months with an allocation of RM25,000.00.

The main SDGs impacted through this solution project are Goal 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, Goal 13 – Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, Goal 14 – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development and Goal 15 – Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

SOLUTION PROJECT 2

Project description

This project is to identify and document the issues and problems with the severe ocean debris and littering pollution at Kampung Air Masin and Kampung Melayu Jalan Benteng. This includes continuing education and awareness and prevention solutions.

Mega and mini clean-ups are carried out to encourage communities’ engagement. These clean-ups also enable data to be collected to identify the types and sources of waste. These data will enable better analytics to address the current issues, managing the waste as well as the potential shortcomings and problems to implement the solutions.

Long-term environment education and awareness physical workshops which were planned were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, lockdown and travel restrictions. In order to deliver the education portion of the project to enable sustainability, the delivery of educational videos will be implemented.

The project funded by APPGM-SDG will not only encourage community engagement where waste has value, but this program continuity with the buy-back centre can act as one income-generating project. Continuous education and dialogue with communities will be applied from time to time to the gamer community reports.

The solution provider of this project is Impact Revolution Enterprise. The project duration is nine months with an allocation of RM39,755.00.

The main SDGs impacted through this solution project are Goal 4 – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all, Goal 12 – Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns and Goal 14 – Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
