Empowering a Future: APPGM-SDG and Tamil Teachers of Perak Lift SPM Students Toward Success

Education has long been described as the world’s greatest equaliser, and Nelson Mandela’s powerful reminder—“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”—rings especially true in communities striving for opportunity. In Perak’s Larut Parliament, that message took on renewed meaning through a transformational initiative aimed at uplifting Form 5 students ahead of the SPM 2025 examinations.

Recognising the growing number of students slipping through the education system due to low motivation, limited guidance, and a lack of moral support, the APPGM-SDG partnered with the Association of Tamil Teachers of Perak to launch a three-month coaching programme. Beginning on 20 September and running until 9 November 2025, the initiative brought together 40 students for an intensive academic and motivational journey.

Designed with precision, the programme tackled some of the most common hurdles faced by SPM candidates—poor study habits, ineffective time management, and uncertainty about exam techniques. Through a series of interactive seminars, subject-specific workshops, and hands-on practice sessions, students learned how to analyse past-year questions, craft stronger answers, and manage their time under exam pressures.

But the programme went beyond academics. Its organisers understood that emotional readiness is just as crucial as intellectual preparation. Teachers and high-achieving seniors shared their personal stories, offering inspiration and practical wisdom. These candid conversations helped students build resilience, self-belief, and a deeper sense of purpose as they approached their national exams.

Behind the scenes, meticulous planning ensured every student benefited fully. Experienced subject specialists were selected to guide the sessions, customised study materials were prepared, and strategies were aligned specifically with the SPM 2025 format. The result was a holistic learning environment that supported both the minds and hearts of the young participants.

By the time the programme concluded, its impact was unmistakable. Students walked away with not only refined study techniques but also renewed confidence that would carry them well beyond SPM. The initiative also strengthened networks between educators and students, laying the groundwork for future cohorts to benefit from similar support.

The closing ceremony on 9 November was graced by Acting Deputy Executive Director Mr. James Ryan, who delivered an uplifting message to both parents and students. He urged parents to understand their children’s needs while providing steady encouragement and firm guidance. To the youth, he spoke of dreaming boldly, staying focused, and embracing lifelong learning.

Perhaps the most heartfelt moment came from participant Pavithrira, who shared her personal transformation. “I have been blessed to attend this coaching session,” she said. “I have discovered myself, and I am committed to achieving my dream to become a teacher. I will never stop learning.”

Her words echoed the spirit of the programme—one that set out to unlock potential, inspire ambition, and ultimately change lives. And by all accounts, it succeeded.
