SOLUTION PROJECT 1

Project description

The ‘Young Urban Farmer’ program will be implemented in schools around Permatang Pauh to increase students’ interest in agriculture field.

During this program, all participants in Permatang Pauh will get exposure on initiating urban farms / edible garden at their schools / home. The trainings provided will empower school students or youths to increase their interest in farming and get early exposure towards the benefits and potential of indulging in farming activities.

The project solution will expose them to cultivating cash crops using up to date sustainable and smart soil management and fertigation techniques that could give intermittent revenues.

The solution project funded by the APPGM-SDG widens and diversifies opportunities to overcome the rising cost of living, leveraging the economic potential to provide an alternative sustainable income for the people of Permatang Pauh.

Few modules that will be covered during this program are smart-soil management and introduction, techniques and also few practical and hands-on training such as fertigation system set-up, operation and maintenance and also application and financial. The solution provider of this project is Akar Umbi Global. The project duration is two months with an allocation of RM10,000.00.

Project description

Paddy farmers in Malaysia are continuously haunted by low yields and periodic harvest. Many approaches have been used in other rice producing countries regionally to diversify paddy farmers income. Farmers in southern of China and Thailand traditionally practice polyculture system with the combination of farming the paddy together with fish.

Hydroponic/Aquaponic system is one of the alternatives that paddy farmers in Permatang Pauh can use in order to generate extra income for better livelihoods.

Through this capacity building program, emphasize is given on hydroponic/aquaponic system as a tool to diversify income generate side income to the paddy farmers in Permatang Pauh. The project is in line with the baseline study by Think City in 2019. The solution is continuum as proposed in the baseline includes diversification of paddy farmers income via cash crops and technology incorporation.

Beneficiaries will 20 local paddy farmers and/or their family members who are involved in paddy farming and the project will also emphasize on 20 Local youth as part of participates who could potentially leverage on smart sustainable mixed farming/polyculture system to generate or increase their income via this capacity building program. The project duration is three months with an allocation of RM40,000.00.

SOLUTION PROJECT 3

Project description

The ‘Economic Agro-Food Waste Smart Composting Technique’ program organized in Permatang Pauh aims to increase farmers’ income while reducing the negative impact on the environment and climate.

Paddy farmers in Malaysia, Permatang Pauh included, are still yet to completely embark on efficient paddy husk or waste management. The paddy husk if dealt via smart composting approach will not only reduce the detrimental of the GHGs released due to mismanagement of the waste but would help create income for the farmers via the sales of the organic compost produced.

This project solution funded by APPGM-SDG will build capacity (skills, knowledge and mindset) via a bottom-up approach to invest and encourage the farmers in this method of paddy waste management. Participants will gain skills that will benefit them in the long run to diversity their income while impacting positively to the environment. This program will expose them to produce organic compost from paddy husk and food-crop waste using up to date smart composting techniques.

Beneficiaries will 15 local paddy farmers and/or their family members who are involved in paddy farming. The project will also emphasize on 15 Local youth as part of participants who could potentially leverage on smart sustainable compost production from paddy and food-crop waste to generate or increase their income via this capacity building program. The solution provider of this project is Urbanest Sdn Bhd. The project duration is three months with an allocation of RM40,000.00.

SOLUTION PROJECT 4

Project description

Most of the fishermen have no skills for boat repairing. The project solution for the fishermen in Permatang Pauh aims to provide skills for them to repair boat engines. This will ensure their journey to the sea is safer. They also can save on the cost of repairs and basic maintenance of boat engines.

The helmsman course organized by the community marine department here runs this activity without an improvement license in terms of the helmsman’s license will have a positive impact on customer confidence to participate in each product offered. Qualification of helmsman participants selected by the right association qualified to be proficient in operating a boat or as a fisherman. The project also involves an environmentally friendly program. Participants will clean the river and surrounding areas and the program involves government agencies and factories around the community.

This project can not only provide knowledge and skills to repair boat engines, but also provide a variety of products in terms of tourism and water sports. The gotong-royong project can provide awareness to the community and also program participants about the importance of rehabilitation work. Apart from being able to preserve the quality of the environment, this project is also able to upgrade the river to become a tourist area and an area for recreational activities.

Beneficiaries of this project solution are 25 fishermen (boat engine repair course) and 15 youth men, community leaders and fishermen. The solution provider of this project is Persatuan Riadah Dan Rekreasi Air Persisiran Sungai Perai, Seberang Jaya, Pulau Pinang. The project duration is 10 days with an allocation of RM30,000.00.

2022
